Small residential ALF vs. large assisted living community

Same license, very different days. The roster shows which is which.

Quick answer

No: a six-bed house and a 200-unit building both hold an AHCA assisted living facility license under Chapter 429, Part I, with the same admission criteria and resident rights, though staffing minimums scale with resident count and the awake-overnight rule applies only at 17 or more residents.

Is a small group home in Florida licensed differently from a big assisted living community?

No: a six-bed house and a 200-unit building both hold an AHCA assisted living facility license under Chapter 429, Part I, with the same admission criteria and resident rights, though staffing minimums scale with resident count and the awake-overnight rule applies only at 17 or more residents.

Of the 128 licensed ALFs in Sarasota and Manatee counties, 39 are licensed for 16 or fewer residents and 37 for 100 or more; the median is 62 beds.

What are the advantages of a small residential ALF?

Small homes offer a household routine, the same few caregivers every day, and often lower rates; they can suit someone who is overwhelmed by a large dining room or who needs close supervision more than activities.

Ask whether a caregiver is awake overnight, who covers when the owner is away, and how the home handles a fall at 3 a.m.

What are the advantages of a large assisted living community?

Large communities offer more staff on each shift, more activities and amenities, on-site therapy and, often, specialty licenses such as LNS or ECC that let residents stay longer as needs grow.

They also post AHCA inspection histories publicly for every visit; our pages show those histories for each facility licensed for 40 or more residents.

How do I compare a small ALF and a large one fairly?

Compare the same things: the license and any specialty license, the overnight staffing, the total monthly cost at your parent's care level, AHCA's sanctions list, and the 45-day notice terms in the contract.

The assisted living roster can be sorted by beds to see both kinds side by side.

Are small residential ALFs cheaper in Sarasota and Manatee?

Often, though no published figure compares them; small homes generally have lower overhead and fewer amenities, but a home that provides very close supervision can price near larger communities, so compare total monthly quotes at your parent's care level.

Ask each whether the rate is all-inclusive or tiered by care level.

Do small ALFs post inspection histories online?

Their AHCA profiles show license data and sanctions, but the posted visit-by-visit inspection history we reproduce is mainly available for larger facilities, so ask a small home for its most recent survey report.

Florida facilities must make survey results available on request.
