What is VA Aid and Attendance?

Aid and Attendance is an increased rate of VA pension for wartime veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily activities, are bedridden, live in a nursing home because of disability, or have very limited eyesight; it raises the maximum annual pension rate rather than paying a separate benefit.

SituationMaximum annual rateAbout per month
Veteran with no dependents, Aid and Attendance$29,093$2,424
Veteran with one dependent, Aid and Attendance$34,488$2,874
Two veterans married to each other, both A&A$46,143$3,845
Surviving spouse, no dependents, Aid and Attendance$18,697$1,558
Veteran with no dependents, Housebound$21,313$1,776

VA pension rates effective December 1, 2025 through November 30, 2026.

VA pays the difference between that maximum rate and the household's countable income. Unreimbursed medical expenses, including assisted living or home care fees for a person who needs care, reduce countable income, which is how many veterans with modest pensions or Social Security qualify.

What is the VA pension net worth limit for 2026?

The net worth limit effective December 1, 2025 is $163,699, counting assets plus annual income, with the primary home and a reasonable lot excluded; VA also applies a three-year look-back to asset transfers made to get under the limit.

Penalties for transfers can last up to five years. Plan with an accredited VA representative before moving money.

Who qualifies for VA pension with Aid and Attendance?

A veteran generally needs at least 90 days of active duty with at least one day during a wartime period, a discharge other than dishonorable, and age 65 or a permanent disability, plus income and net worth within limits and a medical need for aid and attendance.

Surviving spouses of qualifying veterans can apply for survivors pension with the same Aid and Attendance increase.

Where do Sarasota and Manatee veterans get free help applying?

Each county runs a Veterans Services office that helps veterans and survivors file pension and Aid and Attendance claims free of charge, and VA-accredited service organization representatives do the same; no one may charge to help you file an initial claim.

Bring the DD-214, a physician's statement of care needs (VA Form 21-2680) and receipts or a contract showing what care costs.

Can Aid and Attendance be combined with Florida Medicaid?

It can, but VA pension counts as income for Medicaid, and for a nursing home resident on Medicaid VA usually reduces the pension to $90 a month; that interaction is worth reviewing before applying for either.

An elder law attorney or accredited representative can model both programs together.
