TL;DR

AHCA lists 58 ALFs with Sarasota addresses and 31 with Bradenton addresses. Sarasota's are more likely to hold ECC or LNS licenses; Bradenton's are more likely to accept Medicaid or OSS. Neither city has a published price median.

Why compare the two cities?

Sarasota and Bradenton sit about a dozen miles apart along the same stretch of US 41, and many families live near the county line in University Park, the airport area or Lakewood Ranch. A parent's doctors and church may be in one city and a daughter's house in the other. It is common to tour in both.

They are in different counties, which changes one practical thing: the Aging and Disability Resource Center. Manatee County (Bradenton) is served by Senior Connection Center; Sarasota County by the Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida. The Florida rules for the buildings themselves are identical.

How do they compare on paper?

Using AHCA's facility profiles for every licensed ALF with a Sarasota or Bradenton mailing address:

AHCA dataSarasota addressesBradenton addresses
Licensed ALFs5831
Licensed beds3,7621,963
Median beds5568
With a specialty license239
Listing memory care2516
With OSS beds65
Listing Medicaid services1915
With any AHCA fine on file4422
Nursing homes2310

Sarasota mailing addresses cover a much larger area than the city itself, which partly explains its larger count.

What stands out?

Sarasota's facilities hold more of the specialty licenses that let residents stay as needs grow, including most of the region's extended congregate care licenses. Bradenton's, relative to their number, more often report Medicaid services or beds set aside for Optional State Supplementation residents, which matters for families who expect to need public help.

Bradenton's best-known options for planning ahead are its two long-established life plan communities on 21st Avenue West; Sarasota's are spread from the downtown bayfront to Palmer Ranch.

How should you choose between them?

Start with who will visit. Distance from the family members who will stop by most often predicts how often they will come. Then check payment fit: if Medicaid is likely within two or three years, favor a facility that already contracts with long-term care plans. Only then compare buildings on inspection history, staffing and price.

The Sarasota and Bradenton assisted living pages break each city into areas and list every license with its latest survey and citations.

Do nursing homes follow the same pattern?

Sarasota addresses also account for more of the two counties' nursing homes, including most of the highest-rated ones, many of them health centers inside life plan communities. Bradenton's nursing homes cluster near HCA Florida Blake Hospital in West Bradenton and near Manatee Memorial downtown.

For a short rehab stay, distance from the discharging hospital and from family usually matters more than the city name.

What about hospitals and doctors?

Sarasota has Sarasota Memorial, the region's largest hospital, and HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital; Bradenton has Manatee Memorial and HCA Florida Blake; Lakewood Ranch Medical Center sits between them. A parent with a cardiologist or oncologist at one system may want assisted living close to it.

Each facility page lists the two nearest acute-care hospitals by straight-line distance.

What do families most often get wrong?

They compare base rents. Florida assisted living bills usually combine a base rate with care-level charges, medication management fees and sometimes a second-person fee, so a lower base rent can produce a higher bill. Ask both facilities for the total monthly cost at your parent's assessed level of care, in writing, and ask how often reassessments happen.

The other common mistake is not reading the contract's 45-day notice and refund terms until the day of the move.

Can I tour both counties in one day?

Yes; the drive along US 41 or I-75 between central Sarasota and central Bradenton is usually under half an hour outside rush hour. Plan two or three tours, visit the favorite again at lunch, and read the state record for each before the second visit. Bring the same list of questions to every tour so the answers can be compared side by side afterward.

What about Lakewood Ranch and the county line?

Lakewood Ranch straddles both counties, and its facilities use Bradenton, Sarasota or Lakewood Ranch addresses. We group the Manatee-side ZIP codes on the Lakewood Ranch page and the Sarasota-side 34240 on the east Sarasota page. For families living there, the choice is rarely Sarasota versus Bradenton at all; it is which building is closest to the people who will visit, and which county's Area Agency on Aging will handle a Medicaid screening if one is needed later. That depends on where the parent lives, not where the family lives.

Frequently asked questions

Is assisted living cheaper in Bradenton than Sarasota?

No published figure compares them; CareScout publishes only a Florida median of $66,000 a year, so get written quotes in both.

Do Sarasota and Bradenton follow the same rules?

Yes, both follow Florida's Chapter 429 and AHCA rules; only the Area Agency on Aging differs.

Which city has more memory care?

Sarasota addresses list more ALFs with memory care programs, in line with their larger total count.

Which county has more assisted living?

Sarasota County; AHCA lists more licensed ALFs and beds there than in Manatee.
