TL;DR

Across 41 Sarasota and Manatee nursing homes with CMS staffing data, total nurse staffing runs from 3.18 to 5.75 hours per resident per day (median 3.69), and staff turnover has a median of 45.6%. The best-staffed homes are mostly inside life plan communities.

Why staffing hours matter

CMS calculates each certified nursing home's staffing from payroll records it submits, not from what the home says on a tour. The headline figure is total nurse staffing hours per resident per day: registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and nurse aides combined, divided by the number of residents. More hands means more help getting to the bathroom, more time for meals and more eyes on someone who is declining.

CMS also publishes turnover, the share of nursing staff who left over a year. High turnover means residents keep meeting new caregivers who do not yet know them.

How do the local homes compare?

Here are the six best-staffed and six least-staffed homes in the two counties by reported total nurse hours, with turnover and CMS's overall rating as CMS publishes them:

The two-county median is 3.69 hours, with 0.65 of those hours from registered nurses. Every nursing home page in our directory shows its own figures beside those medians.

Does ownership make a difference here?

In this data, nonprofit homes report a median of 4.85 staffing hours against 3.66 for for-profit homes (11 nonprofit and 30 for-profit homes with data). Several of the nonprofits are health centers inside life plan communities, which serve mostly their own residents and are financed partly by entrance fees, so the comparison is not apples to apples.

What it does show is that the region's highest staffing levels are concentrated in a few campuses that most people enter years before they need nursing care.

How should a family use the numbers?

For a short rehab stay after a hospital discharge, compare the homes that have a bed and accept your insurance on three numbers: total nurse hours, turnover and the latest inspection's deficiency count. For a long-term stay, add the long-stay quality rating and visit at a shift change, when you can see how many staff are actually on the floor.

Remember that a home above the median on staffing can still have a bad inspection, and the reverse. The numbers narrow the list; the visit decides.

What is a good number for registered nurse hours?

Registered nurses do the assessments, care planning and higher-level clinical work, so CMS reports their hours separately. In the two counties the median is a little over half an hour of RN time per resident per day. Homes well above that tend to handle more complex rehab patients; homes well below it rely more on licensed practical nurses and aides.

CMS also reports weekend staffing separately, because many homes run thinner on weekends. If your parent will be admitted on a Friday, the weekend number is the one to look at.

Why can a well-staffed home still have a bad inspection?

Staffing is about quantity; inspections look at specific failures such as medication errors, infection control or a fall that was not handled correctly. A busy, well-staffed rehab unit can still be cited, and a small home with average staffing can have a clean survey. That is why CMS's overall rating combines inspections, staffing and quality measures, and why we show each component.

Use staffing to narrow the list and the inspection details to ask sharper questions on the tour.

How often does CMS update the numbers?

CMS refreshes Care Compare data monthly, with staffing figures drawn from the most recent quarter of payroll data. Our pages show the data date. A home that has just changed owners or administrators can move quickly in either direction, so a recent change of ownership is a reason to ask what the current staffing looks like.

Frequently asked questions
