What happens when assisted living savings run out in Florida?
Unless the resident qualifies for help, the facility can end residency for nonpayment with 45 days' written notice; families avoid that by applying for Medicaid long-term care, Optional State Supplementation or VA pension before savings reach the $2,000 Medicaid asset limit.
Ask now whether your parent's facility contracts with Medicaid long-term care plans and accepts OSS. If it does not, a move may be unavoidable, and planning it is better than rushing it.
How long does it take to get Florida Medicaid for long-term care?
DCF's financial determination can take 45 to 90 days, and for home and community-based services the ADRC wait list can add months, which is why screening should start early.
Nursing home Medicaid for someone already in a nursing home does not use that wait list.
Which Sarasota and Manatee assisted living facilities take Medicaid?
AHCA profiles show 50 ALFs in Sarasota and Manatee counties listing Medicaid services (18 list the assisted living waiver program, 34 list assistive care services).
Contracts change, so confirm with the facility and the resident's long-term care plan.
Can a veteran's pension help when savings run low?
Yes: VA pension with Aid and Attendance can pay a veteran up to $2,424 a month, or a surviving spouse up to $1,558, in maximum rates effective December 2025, with unreimbursed care costs deducted from countable income.
County veterans service offices file claims free.
Can a facility refuse a resident who switches to Medicaid?
A Florida ALF that does not contract with the resident's Medicaid long-term care plan does not have to accept Medicaid payment, which is why families should ask about Medicaid participation before moving in rather than when savings run out.
Nursing homes certified for Medicaid follow federal rules that limit discharges for a change in payment source.
What is the first call to make?
Call your county's Aging and Disability Resource Center for a long-term care screening, then contact DCF through ACCESS Florida to start the financial application, and ask an elder law attorney about a qualified income trust if income exceeds $2,982 a month.
Senior Connection Center (Manatee) is at 1-800-336-2226; the Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida (Sarasota) at 1-866-413-5337.
Can a reverse mortgage pay for care?
It can for a homeowner who stays in the house, because a Home Equity Conversion Mortgage pays out while the borrower lives there, but the loan generally comes due when the borrower moves out for more than 12 months, so it does not fund a permanent move to assisted living.
Get HUD-approved counseling, which is required before a reverse mortgage, and talk to an elder law attorney about Medicaid effects.
